The following Institutions have an active pilot or implementation site for their LMS evaluation/transition and posted detailed LMS pilot reports that included analysis of faculty and student surveys as well analysis of LMS features.

 

Ohio State University

  • 93% of Faculty in Autumn 2015 Pilot preferred Canvas. As compared to 7% with a preference for D2L
  • 50% of student respondents indicated they used a mobile device to access Canvas, and that the ability to use Canvas on a smartphone or tablet was a significant advantage.

Indiana University

  • 73% of Faculty piloting Canvas agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, “The pilot LMS increased my efficiency as a teacher“. As compared to 46% with Blackboard and 33% with D2L
  • 90% of Faculty piloting Canvas agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, “The pilot LMS enabled me to do what I wanted for my course(s)”. As compared to 69% with Blackboard and 66% with D2L.
  • 57% of Students piloting Canvas agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, “The pilot LMS helps me to make efficient use of my time in the course”. As compared to 33% with Blackboard and 30% with D2L.

Pennsylvania State University

  • 82% of Instructors agreed or strongly agreed that Canvas was easy to use.
  • 89% of Instructors believed Canvas allowed them to manage course content effectively.
  • 87% of Instructors agreed Canvas helped them to easily track grades.

Piloted: Blackboard in Fall 2014, Canvas in Spring 2015
Result: Migrating to Canvas in 2015-16

 

Purdue University

  • “What-If”: Students rated the ‘what-if’ feature, allows student to put a grade in for an assignment to see the impact on the final grade, in Canvas as their most liked.
  • Face-to-Face preferred Canvas, Online preferred Blackboard: Pilot Instructor’s preference, ‘For face-to-face courses Canvas was rated higher (M=4.53) than Blackboard (M=3.88), and for primarily online courses Blackboard (M=4.50) was rated higher than Canvas (M=3.96).”

University of Missouri

  • 46% of Instructors comfortable with Canvas in Less than 1 hour (76% within 2 hours)
  • 68 % of Instructors listed Usability most liked feature in Canvas
  • 80% of Students comfortable with Canvas in Less than 1 hour (93% within 2 hours)

Result: Recommend move to Canvas starting May 2016

 

University of Wisconsin – Madison:

  • 4-to-1: Students preferred Canvas (42%) over D2L (10%) and Moodle (6%).  38% thought that basically all LMSs are the same.
  • One LMS:  “70% of students agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, ‘The same LMS should be used campus-wide by all classes and instructors.'”

Result: Extended Pilot through 2015-16

Yale University

  • 46% of Instructors in the Pilot reported that it took less than 1 week before feeling comfortable with Canvas.  (86% within 2 weeks)
  • 64% of Students in the Pilot reported that it took less than 1 week before feeling comfortable with Canvas. (91% within 2 weeks)
  • “80% of pilot instructors preferred Canvas to Classes*v2.” (Students 2-to-1)
